What once served as a sizable trading hub for many of the wilder races, Chast evolved into an empire of those on the fringe when a retiring pirate named Malecrod managed to secure his reputation among the city’s merchant circles. Malecrod was feared in many a port not as much for what he himself could do, but for the wrath that his company could bring down on his foes. After his circle began to cycle more of their own vested interests and goods, more of the darker element garnered a foothold in the territory, and before long, Malecrod managed to win an election into the city council. In time, he and his circle grew to control much of the city, and subsequently changed the political structure of the city to ensure that his interests were protected far into the future. In fact, his grandson continued to grow the city into a wellspring of iniquity, as Malecrod’s contacts brought many a fell presence into the walls of Chast that worked closely with the family to ensure their interests were met, by whatever means necessary. As the city’s presence grew, the effects were felt on the surrounding countryside. The ever-corruptible humans in the area gradually shifted under the leadership of the Malecrod line, which never took credit themselves, preferring the city’s name over their own. Many of the wilder races in the area either moved on or embraced the new leadership, and with the simpler alliances forming first as gestures of respect toward Chast, the evolution from city to empire began to take place. While the orcs never allied themselves with Chast, they never took action against them. The hobgoblin forces first joined up when certain officials within the city contracted them as a well-paid militia, but as time went on, the usual loosely-allied hobgoblin race grew decidedly comfortable with the accommodations and supplies, and on the insistence of the inner workings and plotting efforts of Chast, they were afforded all the citizenship opportunities of the long-time denizens. As the hobgoblin alliance grew to include all the ancillary factions, the military might of the empire grew to be something that many other kingdoms feared. The hobgoblin forces helped to train the human presence in the empire, while the fell entities within the hub of Chast brought the arcane element into the previously uneducated area. As the years went by, Chastian officials decided to branch out and increase the breadth of their rule, and for close to a century, their slow approach went unchecked. Only when the outposts of the Silver Kingdoms fell under the sword did resistance show.
